Looking to Orem's future/ Orem Pride

Orem Pride to me means a city where you want to live, where you want to work, where you want to play, where you want to gather, a city you want to call your home. As a community, when we do these things, everyone benefits. What is the city's role in nurturing and promoting civic pride? What can the residents do to show Orem Pride? How can our local businesses cultivate Orem pride?

  1. The city government should be a resource. A place where people can find information and people. It should facilitate (not run) community events. Provide a gathering place for citizens and information distribution. Perhaps a searchable site that just gathers absolutely everything going on in Orem. Like a newspaper should, but with out the ads.

Residents can show pride in Orem by supporting the community. Participate in the events around them. Attend high school plays, concerts and sporting events. Find out what things you like and join a local group that does them. Tell others about the great things going on in Orem.

Local businesses can cultivate Orem pride (and get some great advertising) by sponsoring a local group or team. Find someone in the community that needs help and provide a service for them. Donate time at a school.

Pride doesn't have to be a big celebration, but should show by the everyday things we do.

Who is Phil?

My name is Philip Hornberger, and I am a native Orem resident, and I have enjoyed growing up, living and working in the city of Orem. I attended Orem Elementary, Lakeridge Junior High, and Mountain View High School.

While having grown up in Orem, I have had many opportunities to work for different employers, and run my own businesses. From having a paper route when I was young to owning and operating a retail and eating establishment, to owning and operating my own successful property management company, I have come to know and understand business in Orem. Currently, I invest in and sell real estate in our city.

Not only have I enjoyed doing business in Orem, but I have also taken advantage of the wide variety of recreational opportunities available here. I am avid outdoor recreational enthusiast. I enjoy organized team sports, golf, swimming, and running.

Although I have done much in the city of Orem, I have also traveled extensively. In the past six years, I have traveled more than a half-million miles and visited over two hundred cities across America with a local firm, EWI. I started at lowest levels of the company, but I quickly worked my way up to become the head of their audio/ visual department where I led large groups of people to set up multi-million dollar shows all across the country. Soon there after I was given the privilege to go from behind the scenes to the forefront of the public eye where I became a nationally recognized professional speaker.

Through my work and travel across this great country, I truly recognize the good life that Orem City has to offer its residents. I am working to enhance what we have now, and create a better future for tomorrow.

There is truly no place like home. I no longer travel, but continue my real estate work at home with my sweetheart as we look forward to the birth of our first child with the New Year. I look forward to raising my children and grandchildren right here in Orem, where they will have safe places to live, work, play, and where the citizens demonstrate a sense of community.

Why am I running?

I’m not running because I have great political ambitions. The mayor’s office is a non-partisan responsibility. The mayor has a stewardship for the well being of the community and it’s citizens. As mayor, I promise to be a great ambassador for our city, promoting family values, healthy lifestyles, opportunities for business growth, fiscal responsibility and safety. I will exercise good judgment when faced with tough issues. As part of the future generation of the City of Orem, I look forward to helping our fine city meet the needs of its citizenry while nurturing the prosperity that comes with good planning for the coming decades. I look forward to working with the great employees and elected officials we have in Orem to promote and advance these ideals.

"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it." - Thomas Jefferson

Why Mayor?

I, like many Orem residents, have become uncomfortable with the direction the city has taken in recent years regarding growth, finance and zoning. While pondering these serious matters I concluded that I couldn’t be a proper member of this community by continuing to be a silent citizen, hence implying agreement with these actions. Therefore I determined that I must do something. My discomfort with the status quo caused me to file my candidacy to shed light upon these far reaching issues and offer a conservative choice to those residing in Orem. I will not stand by and watch while my future and my home is being mortgaged for a fleeting fancy. (Please refer to the Blog questions)

I feel it is the right time for someone of courage, character, strength, and someone without political baggage or background to step up to the mike, to ask the tough questions and to lead Orem towards a future designed with the citizen in mind.

I will steer our community far from debt and financial entanglements. Under my direction the city will live within its means, setting the example for its citizenry to do the same whether those means be great or small. As troubling economic times have a firm hold upon this community and our great nation, I will honor the city's charter, to provide with a smile, various necessary community services, as well as a safe, secure place where our city's sons and daughters may prosper in peace.
